What is KYBELLA?

Extra fat in the upper throat area can create the appearance of a double chin, which is usually an undesirable feature for both women and men. Excess pockets of fat below the chin (also known as the submental area) happen for a variety of reasons (including genetics, weight fluctuations, and aging) and lead to a softer chin and jawline for a less defined profile.

At Clear Lake Dermatology in Webster and League City, TX, our board-certified dermatologists provide a revolutionary treatment that eliminates neck fat. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), KYBELLA is a new nonsurgical treatment for submental fat. The active ingredient in KYBELLA is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid (DA), which breaks down and absorbs fat cells under the chin. After injecting it beneath the chin, you may see a visible decrease in the volume of fat. When the fat is removed, those fat cells will not regenerate, so you can enjoy your new, slimmer profile and stronger jawline for years to come.

Who should get KYBELLA?

The best candidates for KYBELLA injectable treatments have unwanted fat in their upper neck (submental area). This creates a double chin or unwanted fullness. KYBELLA injections eliminate resistant areas of fat that have been difficult to lose with normal weight-loss techniques because of genetics, aging, or other conditions. If you maintain a healthy, stable weight but diet and exercise have not worked to remove the fat in your neck, then KYBELLA may help you achieve your cosmetic goals. While KYBELLA may reduce small to moderate pockets of fat in the upper neck, larger amounts of fat may require surgical liposuction.

Our Kybella Injection Technique

We perform KYBELLA injections during an appointment in one of our treatment rooms. If needed, one of our dermatologists can apply a numbing cream to the treatment area. We'll cleanse your skin before administering KYBELLA. The procedure usually takes about 15 minutes and includes a few small injections that target the submental area. Some patients may need a single treatment to achieve their desired results, while others may require several injections spaced out about three weeks apart at Clear Lake Dermatology.

What to Expect after KYBELLA

KYBELLA treatments do not require general anesthesia, so you can leave the office when you feel comfortable enough to resume your normal routine. At first, you may have temporary bruising, numbness, or swelling below your chin; however, this should subside in 2 – 3 days. Call Clear Lake Dermatology immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms, like facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your facial expressions appear uneven. While the eliminated fat cells do not return, the remaining cells can grow bigger, so you must maintain a stable weight after your KYBELLA treatments to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results will leave your neck looking tighter, sleeker, and more defined.

KYBELLA FAQ

How much does KYBELLA cost?
Your costs for KYBELLA will depend on how many treatments are needed. In your consultation, a customized plan will be created to work with your goals. A member of our staff will also talk about payments we accept in your first appointment.

How does KYBELLA work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in KYBELLA, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the upper neck. Once they are eliminated, these cells cannot grow back. This is why more treatments should not be needed as soon as you have reached your desired outcome.

Can KYBELLA be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, KYBELLA is only available for treatment of the upper neck. KYBELLA can effectively reduce the look of a double chin. KYBELLA isn't approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for any other areas of the face or body.

Am I eligible for a KYBELLA treatment?
Before your consultation, you will answer a few questions to make sure you are a candidate for KYBELLA treatments. You need to be over the age of 18 years old, not breastfeeding or pregnant, and cannot have an active infection in or around the treatment site. Prior to receiving treatment, you are encouraged to share any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so they can determine if you can safely receive the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a personalized injection plan will be developed to match your needs and goals. Typically, patients receive between 2 – 4 KYBELLA injections to achieve their goals. KYBELLA appointments need to be spaced about 30 days apart. You shouldn't receive more than six treatments.
