What is Microneedling?

When skin-care products no longer provide optimal results but you don't want to undergo surgery, our skilled dermatologists may recommend a minimally invasive treatment like microneedling. At Clear Lake Dermatology in League City and Webster, TX, we proudly offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy). Dermapen, SkinPen®, and MicroPen microneedling all use devices that have fine needles to effectively and safely create micro-injuries to your skin. The micro-injuries prompt the body's natural production of elastin and collagen. These nutrients improve the overall health and appearance of your skin. Often performed with other skin treatments, such as vitamin serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling can minimize scars, pores, and stretch marks. Schedule an appointment at Clear Lake Dermatology to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and how to personalize the treatment for your skin concerns and goals.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

At Clear Lake Dermatology, we perform microneedling for people in League City and Webster, TX to stimulate the skin's natural healing process. Microneedling offers a wide variety of advantages, including:

  • Reduction of scars, uneven skin tone, or stretch marks
  • Safe, minimally invasive treatment option
  • Minimized look of creases, fine lines, and signs of aging
  • Results in more even texture and tone of complexion

Ideal Candidates

If you have mild or moderate complexion problems, like rough skin texture or low elasticity, microneedling may be a great treatment option for you. Microneedling procedures can also reduce the look of scars, pores, and stretch marks. Because this treatment stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, you'll have to wait a month before seeing the full benefits of your microneedling treatment. Once your skin heals and produces additional nutrients, you'll see a healthier-looking complexion.

Our Microneedling Technique

Microneedling takes place in one of our spacious procedure rooms and usually takes 30 – 60 minutes to complete. Generally, the procedure causes minimal discomfort, but if needed, we can apply a numbing cream or local anesthesia. We'll start the procedure by cleaning your skin, and then we'll gently move the microneedling handpiece over your treatment area. After completing the treatment, many patients want to apply PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or a vitamin serum because the nutrients can penetrate the skin easier after microneedling. After your procedure, we'll use a personalized moisturizer with SPF because your skin will be more sensitive.

What to Expect

After your microneedling session, you may experience mild side effects, including redness and swelling. These side effects should subside on their own in a day or so. It may take 1 – 2 months for the collagen and elastin levels to increase enough that you're able to see visible changes in the appearance and health of your treated skin. You should schedule 4 – 6 follow-up sessions spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart for the best results and long-term benefits. During your consultation, we'll discuss your cosmetic goals and determine how many sessions you'll need. With proper skin care, your results should continue to improve over the next 6 – 12 months because of the increased production of collagen.

Microneedling FAQ

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
During the microneedling process, channels are created in your skin that help other treatments reach the deeper layers. This is why microneedling is frequently done with other treatments, like special serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). During your consultation, Dr. Joe will explain which treatments may be performed along with microneedling and which best fits your skin goals.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Typically, patients receive 3 – 6 treatments to see their best results. However, the number of sessions you need will vary based on your skin's condition and your goals. Microneedling may be performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Joe will be able to estimate the number of sessions you will want based on your skin and goals. Once you have reached your goal, Dr. Joe recommends getting touch-up sessions every six months.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
In general, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor there are very few side effects afterward. Microneedling can be performed on most skin areas, including the face, arms, neck, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling isn't recommended if you have been on Accutane recently, plus if you have an open wound, herpes simplex, or active skin infection. Additionally, you might not be able to get microneedling if you're nursing, pregnant, or getting radiation therapy.
