Skin cancer affects a number of people in Houston, League City, and the surrounding Bay Area. The board certified physicians at Clear Lake Dermatology have extensive experience treating all forms of skin cancer whether it is melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma.
A leading cause of skin cancer is overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. As such, this cancer is normally found on areas that receive a great deal of sun exposure such as the face, neck, and hands. While skin cancer is more common in these areas, it can actually appear anywhere on the body. Although skin cancer affects people of all ages, Caucasians are more likely to develop this disease than people with darker skin. This condition also runs in families, so those with an immediate family member who has previously been diagnosed with skin cancer are more likely to develop it.
Skin Cancer Signs
Some signs that an individual may have a cancerous growth include moles that change in appearance or bleed. Hard bumps with a waxy appearance or crust-like covering can also be signs of skin cancer. Firm nodules that have a red tip or center are also indicators of skin cancer. People who notice these types of lesions growing on their skin should immediately visit a dermatologist.
Do not disturb unusual skin growths or attempt removal at home. Doing so could result in infection and scarring. Do-it-yourself removal techniques are also not effective at removing cancer that lies beneath the skin’s surface. The best course of action one can take for abnormal skin growths is to visit a board certified dermatologist.
When you visit Clear Lake Dermatology, you can be sure you are getting the best care available in Houston, League City, and the surrounding Bay Area. If you notice an unusual growth, do not delay, as skin cancer is relatively curable when caught in the early stages.
Skin Cancer Treatment
Once skin cancer is diagnosed, your dermatologist will determine the best treatment options. The treatment chosen depends upon the type, size, and location of the skin cancer. All skin cancer treatments at Clear Lake Dermatology are performed under local anesthesia to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
Skin cancer destruction may be possible for smaller and superficial skin cancers, and involves scraping, burning and freezing the lesion with a small margin of normal skin. The resulting open wound is then allowed to heal. This option is quick to perform and requires no stitching, but may take several weeks to heal, and require more wound care at home.
Bigger and deeper skin cancers usually require taking a deeper cut of the lesion with a margin of normal skin. The deeper wound is then closed using stitches or surgical staples. This option takes a longer outpatient surgical appointment, but involves less wound care since the wound is closed and usually heals within one or two weeks. The largest and most advanced skin cancers, or those lesions located in sensitive areas of the face like the nose, eyes, ears and mouth may require Mohs surgery, which is performed by a dermatologist who has been specially trained in skin cancer surgery.
